Portable Applications

Some of you may remember the computer era in the the old days during late 80’s. Ok.. if you do remember, have a think what sorts of software application were around? There were Wordstar for word processing, Lotus 123 for spreadsheet, and some programming tools such as Turbo Pascal and so on. Microsft windows was not so famous as today. Hard drive was so expensive. So, most of computers did not have hard drives. To run the computer, we just inserted a 5,25″ floppy disk of operating system. Once in run, we just need to insert another floppy disk to run applications. To write a letter, just plug in a floppy disk contains Wordstar then just type: WS in the command prompt. Then it will bring you to editor screen. So simple. The same thing also apply if you want to make calculation on spreedsheet, insert a Lotus 123 floppy disk then type “123″ and it runs. To do programming, insert a Turbo Pascal floppy disk then type “turbo” then jot down your logic of programm on the editor.
All those applications on that days didnot need to be installed as they do today. We can just carry floppy disks contain those applications and plug in to the any computer when we need them.

Can we do the same mechanism today? sure you can. This is called as Portable Applications. There are various application ranging from Office, Messengers, Internet browsers, Email clients and so on. I believe a lot more application will be put on. So go on get it for free from this web site.
Using 5,25″ floppy disks? of course not. Now, we can use any portable storage device such as USB flash drive, portable hard drives, or even your iPod/MP3 players. What you need to do as just download applications that you need, extract them on your portable storage device and just plug in to any computer.
